The Best Tsurumi Pump Buying Checklist: 7 Steps a Quality Inspector Never Skips

When I first started reviewing pump orders, I assumed any pump bearing a Japanese brand name was automatically going to be flawless. Tsurumi has built that reputation over a century, and honestly, most of the time it holds up. But "most of the time" isn't the same as "always"—and I've learned that the hard way. The KTZ series handles sewage. If you ordered a pump that can push water up 50 meters and the model number you received is rated for 28, the impeller might look identical at a glance. It is not.

What I do: pull the performance curve from the current spec sheet and plot your duty point (flow rate and head) on it. If your operating point falls outside the recommended window, stop everything and fix the order.

What I check: whether the pump has the newer double-plug cable seal system (most Tsurumi models built after 2015 have it) or the older gland-and-boot arrangement. The double-plug system doesn't require the cable to be stripped back to the core, which eliminates a whole class of moisture-ingress problems.

I knew I should have verified the cable seal on one of my first pump orders. But I thought "what are the odds?" Well, the odds caught up with me when a site team called after heavy rain, reporting a pump that kept tripping its earth-leakage breaker. If the pump is going to a remote mine site with nobody around to reset it, go with the automatic-reset version. If it's feeding a sensitive process line, the manual reset is the right choice—otherwise the pump can cycle on and off while something's wrong upstream, which is its own kind of headache.

The question isn't which one is "better." It's which one matches how your site actually operates.

Step 4: Check the discharge connection size

This sounds too basic for a checklist, and I get it. But you would not believe how many orders get shipped with a 4-inch discharge when the site piping is metric.

Tsurumi uses both JIS and ANSI flanges depending on the product line and target market. The difference can be as subtle as bolt-hole spacing. You do not want to be standing on a mine site with an 80 kg pump and a pipe flange that can't bolt to it.

(Should mention: this matters more for mixed-flow and axial-flow pumps installed in permanent drainage stations. For portable dewatering pumps, it's less critical but still worth a 30-second visual check.)

Step 5: Confirm the power source—single-phase vs. three-phase

This is where I've seen the most costly mistakes, and it's usually the buyer's fault rather than the supplier's. A 1.5 kW pump comes in both single-phase and three-phase versions. The physical dimensions are identical. The price difference is small. If your site has single-phase supply and you've ordered a three-phase unit, the pump won't start. Not a slow burn—a no-start, project-delayed failure.

I want to say we caught that mistake before it cost us a contract, but I'd be misremembering. We caught it during a pre-installation test, two days before the client's deadline. The replacement cost us overnight freight and four hours of the electrical subcontractor's time. About $1,800, on a $900 pump. The best anyone could do at that point was minimise the damage.

Step 6: Check the documentation package

The mistakes that keep showing up in my review queue

Skipping the dry-run seal check

Tsurumi pumps can handle brief dry running, but "brief" is not "forever." The silicon carbide mechanical seals will glaze over with extended dry operation. I know a site supervisor who skipped the suction check because the pump "was installed the day before." That was the one time it mattered—the pump ran dry for 40 minutes during commissioning, the seal surface was damaged, and it failed within six months.

Ordering "the same model as last time"

Tsurumi updates product lines quietly. A model from 2019 might have different voltage requirements than the visually identical 2025 version. Always request the current spec sheet. Never assume the old one is still accurate.

I assumed "same specifications" meant identical results across vendors once. It didn't. Each one had a slightly different interpretation of what "compatible" meant. The pump worked—after additional adapters and a week of delay.

Assuming IP68 means every pump can stay fully submerged indefinitely

Not all models are created equal. Some are rated for continuous operation at full submersion depth. Others, like certain HS series pumps, are designed for semi-submerged operation where the motor gets part of its cooling from ambient air. If you specify the wrong series, you'll own a pump that's technically IP68 but runs hot because it's not getting the cooling it was designed for.

The bottom line

None of these steps takes more than a few minutes, and all of them are free. The cost of missing one is rarely the pump itself—it's the site delay, the emergency freight, the overtime labour.

And if you're a small operation buying a single pump? Run the same checklist. I've seen single-unit orders get the most atrocious oversights because nobody thought a $2,000 purchase deserved proper verification. The best way to avoid these problems is to verify before you pay, not after. The distributor who treats a $900 order seriously is the same one you'll call for a $50,000 contract later. Test them early.
